Five years to
full EU citizenship
Once qualified, the Golden Visa process takes five years before the citizenship application is made.
Pre-approval Process
0-4 Months
The first application can now be submitted online with copies of your required documentation. One Serviço de Fronteiras e Estrangeiros (SEF) approves the application, you will be provided a date to appear for an in-person interview.
Immigration Appointment
0-6 Months
The rule used to be that you had to appear in the district where your investment was made, but to expedite things, SEF now allows the interview to happen in a district of your choosing. Following the interview, an application is made for the primary applicant along with his immediate family, provided they qualify. Once approved, you receive your Portuguese residency card, valid for 1 year.
Residency Card (1st Renewal)
1 Year
Once you have your residency card, you will be free to travel anywhere in the Schengen Zone. At this point, your investment in property, starting at €350,000, will need to be made. You are obligated to spend seven days in the country in the first year. Renewal takes place a month or so before your card expires. Biometrics & current criminal record must be submitted.
Residency Card (2nd Renewal)
3 Years
The second residency card is valid for two years, in which time you must spend at least 14 days in Portugal, although consecutive days aren’t necessary. Another renewal process is undertaken at the end of the second year in much the same process as the step above.
Citizenship Application
5 Years
Once you have completed the third residency permit of two years, you will be permitted to apply for Portuguese citizenship, which may be granted at the end of the fifth year. To finalise citizenship, you must provide proof of income and address, pass a criminal record assessment and demonstrate a working knowledge of Portuguese.
